Safety Tips For An Enjoyable Camping Trip

      By admin | March 5, 2008

Have you ever been on a camping trip and had an unexpected event or weather surprise you? Many people have and some of those even lost their lives because they did not know what to do or did not have a plan. Camping trips require preparation beyond packing your sleeping bag and camping tent. Several necessary items to have before going on a camping trip are first aid supplies and knowledge, knowing where the nearest emergency medical facility is located, and having a contingency plan for bad weather. These are all items that can save your life and make your trip much more enjoyable.

Unfortunately first aid supplies and knowledge usually are not packed with all of the other camping equipment. Camping trips can deliver many surprises such as a sprained ankle, lightning strike, or broken bone. You should be prepared for such events by having basic first aid skills and supplies. I also suggest bringing a book on first aid as a supplemental source of information in case you encounter a situation you have not encountered. You should also be familiar with the location of any ranger facilities or medical treatment facilities in case you are in need of their services. I suggest doing a search of the area before you leave and familiarize yourself with a route to the nearest emergency facility.

Weather is another important event to take into consideration when planning your trip. Not having the knowledge of how to deal with specific weather situations and not having a plan are inviting disaster if nature unleashes her furry. Make sure you know where the nearest shelters or ranger stations are located and be aware of any low areas where rising water could cause problems. It is also a good idea to bring a weather radio to receive any weather updates should one of these situations arise. Before you leave check the weather forecast and have a plan for any weather situations you might encounter, and you will be prepared for any situation you might encounter.

Having the proper camping gear and a weather radio along with proper planning will give you piece of mind for a safe and enjoyable trip. With a little preparation and forward thinking you will be able to handle any emergency situation that might occur in a timely manner and might possibly save your life. Enjoy the outdoors, but make sure you respect what she can deliver.
