Jaipur - The Pink City
By admin | March 6, 2008
Founded by Sawai Jai Singh, the mathematician and astronomer king, Jaipur is home to palatial mansions, striking forts, enchanting palaces and breathtaking gardens. Also known as the Pink City, Jaipur is the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan. The city is called the Pink City due to the expansive use of pink stucco in the construction of many of its structures. Another reason is that much of the city was painted in pink to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1876.
The well-planned streets are now chaotic and offer a view of the multiple hues of India. Prominent features of these roads in Jaipur are the royal archways built on the relevant streets. One can also catch a glimpse of rural folks in the bustling capital city. Since the city lies in the desert state of Rajasthan, nights are as bitterly cold as days are hot. Therefore the best time to visit Jaipur in Rajasthan is during the months of September to March, when the heat is well under control.
There is a lot more to see in the Pink City of Jaipur. The Hawa Mahal is synonymous with Jaipur. Literally meaning ‘Palace of Winds’, the Hawa Mahal has more than 950 windows and is a prime example of royal Rajput architecture. It was built to allow the ladies of the royal family to observe public life without being noticed. Jantar Mantar – the royal observatory, attracts a vast crowd of people each year. Built passionately by Jai Singh, it helps one understand how astronomy worked in his day and age with the help of ancient science. The complex, needless to say is quite striking.
Jaipur also boasts of some splendid forts. The Amber Fort is a must visit site. Lying very close to Jaipur, it sports a perfect amalgamation of Hindu and Mughal styles of architecture. Next in line is the never conquered Jaigarh Fort that is home to the world’s largest cannon, the Jaivana. The Nahargarh Fort is another impressive landmark of Jaipur. This fine fort offers a breathtaking view of the entire region of Jaipur.
All the foodies and shopaholics can also have a whale of a time at the many big and small bistros and shopping haunts of the city. The Rajasthani cuisine is to die for. The aromatic spices and rich gravies will have you hooked. The street food is also worth trying. As far as retail therapy is concerned one can buy a host of exciting products such as tie and dye fabrics, mirror work upholstery items, lac jewelry, and even turbans!
